Ardath Bey Watch

It's that dangerous priest, Imhotep
He's quite ancient, but ain't lost a step
Says his name's Ardath Bey,
But you dames stay away:
Though deceased, the old beast has a rep.

The Mummy (Karl Freund, 1932). Boris Karloff is Imhotep, aka Ardeth Bey, and Zita Johann is is the reincarnated princess Ankh-es-en-amon. This is the original, and still the best Universal Mummy film.

When I was a kid, I liked all the Universal mummy movies. Well... several were scraping the bottom of the franchise barrel, but still fun. Then I watched this original Mummy movie in a nice print as an adult, and it is the only Mummy movie I ever watch.

I'm pretty much in the same camp. I so WANT to love them all, but only the first one casts that feeling of dread, and has a sense of romantic tragedy--and Karloff in Jack Pierce's amazing makeup. I think the main problem is the mummy is just a foot dragging stiff in all those sequels.
