The Peel McCoy

by Surlyh

Far better than Blackman was she
And Thorson made weak cup of tea
These others were chaff
As Steed’s other half
The best spy, distaff, was Rigg, D.

The AVENGERS
For those of you too young to remember what we have been (ahem) pretending to obsess about, here’s a little background on the AVENGERS. The Avengers was a British “Sci-Spy” television series, a craze started by the success of the James Bond films. The show, which ran from 1961 to 1969, starred Patrick Macnee as “John Steed”, a dapper secret agent who always sported a bowler and umbrella. His first partner in spydom was HONOR BLACKMAN as “Cathy Gale”. Next came DIANA RIGG as “Mrs. Emma Peel”, followed by LINDA THORSON as “Tara King”.

The Avengers was distinguished by it’s clever style and wit, and especially by the chemistry and droll, tongue-in-cheek interplay between it’s two most celebrated stars, Macnee and Rigg, as secret agents John Steed and Emma Peel.

To all the fans out there, I have nothing against either Blackman or Thorson. I’m just writing limericks. I’ve never even seen a Blackman episode, and I remember enjoying the King shows and their over-the-top pop art direction.

Surlyh penned a blog C.Y.A.
To prevent bricks from fans, thrown his way
A nice concise history
Of this TV spy/mystery
And the parts Steed's three partners did play

Perhaps it was lecture to class
In hopes to not step in morass
‘cause fans who obsess
May fret and then stress
And maybe that mess I’ll bypass

I just discovered this blog, thanks to surlyh discovering me by way of selfdescribedsiren. And boy, is it something! I was going to respond with a clever limerick of my own, but then I realized--I'm not that talented! Anyway, hands down the best collection of Avengers limericks I've ever read in one place. I like the pictures too. Kind of Wally Woodish but livelier.

I meant selfstyledsiren. You knew that, though.

Hey, gerard! You can't fool me--I KNOW you're that talented--if "talent" is what it takes for what goes on here...

Thanks for the kind words. Now, write some limericks!
